Attorney: Ex-guard’s penalty to be delayed

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 14, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 11/13/8

The delay in the federal trial of Jackson Mayor Frank Melton will mean a delay in the sentencing of former bodyguard Marcus Wright, Wright’s attorney said Wednesday.

“There will be a motion filed, I’m sure, within the next week,” John Colette said. “I think it is a standard procedure with justice. They won’t sentence one when the case is pending against the others.”

U.S. District Court Judge Dan Jordan granted Melton and former police bodyguard Michael Recio a delay until Jan. 5 for their attorneys to read over thousands of pages of government evidence against the two.

A federal grand jury indicted Melton, Recio and Wright in July on three felony counts related to a police-style raid on a Ridgeway Street duplex more than two years ago.
