Parents make school decision

Parents with children attending Bailey Magnet High or Blackburn Middle schools in Jackson are the latest in the district to have the choice of sending their students elsewhere or accepting tutoring partly because of poor performance on the state tests.

The two schools are among 74 Title I schools this year across the state that failed to meet annual achievement goals set by the federal No Child Left Behind law. The only other school in the tri-county area under school improvement is Utica Elementary/Middle School in Hinds County, which failed to meet adequate yearly progress in math, according to the state Department of Education.

The two schools are among eight Jackson Public Schools where parents have until today to decide to transfer within the district.
