Jackson Mayor Frank Melton, if he truly cares about this city, should resign.
On Tuesday, one of his former bodyguards, Jackson police Det. Marcus Wright told federal authorities in a plea deal that he and fellow JPD bodyguard Michael Recio were with the mayor the night of Aug. 26, 2006, when, he said, Melton ordered young men to destroy the a Ridgeway Street duplex with sledgehammers. He said the mayor joined in.
Wright said he entered the duplex on without a search warrant and without asking for permission. He said he drew his weapon inside the home. By pleading guilty to lesser federal charges and agreeing to testify to these facts, Wright has essentially provided the proverbial “smoking gun” for the federal prosecutors’ case.
