McCain: ‘When They Call It a Tie That Means We Win’

“I was a little disappointed the media called it a tie, but I think that means when they call it a tie that means we win,’’ Mr. McCain was recorded by a television crew as saying on Saturday afternoon in a telephone call to Representative Chip Pickering, Republican of Mississippi.

Mr. McCain, who spent Saturday making calls to members of Congress on the bailout negotiations from his campaign headquarters in Arlington, Va., had just allowed a television crew and photographers into his office for footage of him on the phone.

After about five minutes, campaign staffers asked the photographers to leave, but the television crew got one last shot from the office door, with the sound boom still on, of Mr. McCain offering a perhaps more candid view than the exultant post-debate reactions coming from his aides.
