Rankin supervisors OK tobacco ban

Along with cigarettes, the spit cups that rest atop many desks in Rankin County government are going the way of the spittoon or the lobby ashtray.

They’re gone – banned Monday – after the county Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to prohibit the use of all tobacco in county-owned buildings and vehicles.

The move was made to create a more healthful business environment, but it also was initiated to forge a better public image, especially when it comes to those saliva-drenched dip cups.

“Those are gross,” board President Jay Bishop said. “And I don’t care how you do it. It’s unsightly, and I don’t think their demise will do anything to hurt how we do business out here.”
