The Clarion-Ledger Editorial, 7/13/8
Gov. Haley Barbour has formulated what appears to be a fair, sustainable funding mechanism for Medicaid in the long term that might, just might, keep Medicaid from being a political football every few years.
The failure of the Legislature to provide stable funding for the Medicaid program lawmakers authorize is a failure akin to a man going into a restaurant and ordering the best steak in the house with only enough money to pay for a single-decker hamburger.
Lawmakers have known about the change in federal regulations that generated this Medicaid shortfall since 2005 and have failed to act on their own to replace that funding. So for them to criticize Barbour for crafting a solution to a problem they’ve consistently ignored is disingenuous.
