U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker of Tupelo said Monday the current Medicare debate is designed to make him and other Republicans look bad before this November’s general election.
Wicker spoke Monday at the Mississippi State Stennis Institute of Government/Capitol press corps luncheon in Jackson.
Wicker and senior Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran have been criticized by the American Medical Association for voting against a Democrat-sponsored plan that would prevent cuts in the reimbursement rates to physicians who treat Medicare patients.
Medicare is a federal health care plan primarily for senior citizens. Wicker and Cochran helped the Republican minority block consideration of the bill last week.
