WTOK – Mississippi cigarette tax increases nearly dead
With less than three weeks left in the 2018 regular session, an effort by Mississippi lawmakers to raise tobacco taxes has failed so far.
Senate Bill 3048, which could have been used to raise taxes, is dead after the House Ways and Means Committee didn’t take it up before Tuesday’s deadline…
…However, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jeff Smith, a Columbus Republican, says it’s still possible that lawmakers could rewrite any of four bills to increase taxes.

Ellis had two years left in his four-year term when he left. After a November special election for the seat, Democrat Cheikh Taylor now represents District 38.

CLARION LEDGER – McDaniel supporters call for Bryant to appoint him to Cochran’s seat (of course they do)
FreedomWorks and state tea party activists on Wednesday plan to call for Gov. Phil Bryant to appoint state Sen. Chris McDaniel to the U.S. Senate seat Thad Cochran will vacate April 1…
…On Tuesday, Bryant spokesman Clay Chandler said: “Gov. Bryant will announce the U.S. Senate appointment once he decides who that will be. That decision has not been made. But he will not be affected by any political group or dynamic. The governor believes Sen. McDaniel should focus his energy on the campaign to which he is committed.”
McDaniel on Tuesday said his campaign is not involved with the event, but he appreciates his supporters.
CLARION LEDGER – Charlie Mitchell: Tate Reeves knows how to punish those who don’t toe the line
The eight Republican defectors were Nickey Browning of Pontotoc, Videt Carmicheal of Meridian, Dennis DeBar of Leakesville, Tommy Gollott of Biloxi, Briggs Hopson of Vicksburg, Chad McMahan of Guntown, J. Walter Michel of Jackson and Joseph Seymour of Vancleave. Several said not a single school superintendent — the ones who deal with funding and budgets every day — was enamored by what Gunn and Reeves kept calling a vast improvement and proof positive of their personal devotion to public schools.
Now the eight have to worry about vengeance.
Reeves is not the first Machiavellian lieutenant governor of Mississippi, but he puts several of his predecessors in the shade when it comes to punishing those who don’t toe the line.
