Mayor Frank Melton is scheduled for surgery Wednesday, his attorney, Dale Danks Jr., said.
Melton is scheduled to have a cardioverter-defibrillator, a small battery-powered electrical impulse generator, inserted into his heart.
The device is used in patients who have either survived or are in danger of suffering cardiac arrest, the most common cause of death in the Western world, said Dr. John Payne, a cardiologist at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Danks does not anticipate Melton needing much time for recovering.
