In 2007, South Dakota increased its cigarette excise tax by $1 per pack, and that increase has led to lower sales of cigarettes, the Associated Press reports. Sales indicate a 20 percent decline in smoking, as smokers purchased approximately 9 million fewer packs during the same 11-month period than in 2006.
