The expected veto today by President Bush of a bill that would have eased restraints on federally funded embryonic stem cell research isn’t about morality or protecting “life.” Here’s a president who has used his veto power three times in a two-term presidency — twice to impede federal funding for embryonic stem cell research that has the potential to save lives using embryonic cells that are routinely and legally discarded with the trash at fertility clinics and once to keep young American soldiers in harm’s way in an ill-advised war in Iraq that he initiated under false pretenses.
Three vetoes — all stopping policies that could save lives. President Bush wants to protect embryonic cells that aren’t in and of themselves viable as life forms — but not flesh-and-blood young men and women bravely serving our nation in the military. Where’s the logic?
