Melton Taps Woman for Police Chief
Jackson Mayor-Elect Frank Melton made it official Tuesday, introducing his choice for police chief, the first female to head the department.
As previously reported, Shirlene Anderson is Melton’s pick to lead the state’s largest police force. She was Melton’s second-in-command when he was director of the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics.
Anderson made no comments to the media, but Melton said the 29-year law enforcement veteran has already begun working on staff appointments. She must still be confirmed by the city council.
The announcement was made during Melton’s first transition team meeting.
Future city administrators and department heads were among the audience members.
Over the next 10 days the transition team will come up with recommendations for upcoming city positions.
