Community urged to help end violence
At the City Hall news conference, Hinds County District Attorney Faye Peterson urged anyone with information to come forward. Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. said the community was shocked and outraged by what happened.
“I ask all Jacksonians to work together to prevent this kind of violence,” he said. “Be watchful of suspicious activity. Young people are out and soon will be out of school. Look after them and make sure they’re safe.”
About 10 officials and representatives spoke. While all those present appealed for less violence, most offered a different way to achieve the goal. Peterson said she needs cooperation from judges to put away criminals. Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin said he wanted stronger laws and harsher punishments for crimes against youth and the elderly. Johnson said residents’ help and more uplifting stories from the media would help defuse crime.
