Can you hear the heartbeat? bill would prohibit abortions after a heartbeat is detectible #billoftheday

By: Sarah Ulmer - January 29, 2018

Can you hear the heartbeat? If so, this bill would make an abortion prohibited by state law. According to HB 226 would prevent a doctor from performing an abortion before doing an ultrasound to determine if a heartbeat was detected. If a heartbeat was then detected and an abortion still performed, criminal penalties could be applied.

House Bill 226

SECTION 3. Section 41-41-135, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows:

(a)  Except as otherwise provided by Section 41-41-141, a physician may not perform * * * or induce or attempt to perform or induce an abortion without, before the
procedure * * *,

(b) Making a determination * * * by using an abdominal ultrasound imaging procedure if the unborn human individual that the pregnant woman is carrying has a detectable fetal heartbeat; or

(c) Possessing and relying on a determination * * * made by another physician using an abdominal ultrasound imaging procedure if the unborn human individual that the pregnant woman is carrying has a detectable fetal heartbeat.
