Determining the type of bullet found at the scene of crime has become relatively simple thanks to modern day technology. However, this bill would go one step further and require an identifying mark on the bullet casing.
The be known as “Keyaurdra’s Law” SB 2167 would require that all centerfire 3 pistol and rifle cartridges sold in the state of Mississippi have a unique identifying mark. A record of these marks would be be kept by the sellers of the ammunition and linked to a serial number.
The bill was authored by Sen. Jackson of the 32nd. The bill reads:
It shall be unlawful for any person to sell any centerfire pistol or rifle cartridge that does not bear on the casing thereof a serial number or other unique identifying mark. (2) (a) It shall be unlawful for any person to sell any centerfire pistol or rifle cartridge without making a record of the serial numbers or other unique identifying mark of the cartridges sold. (b) Records required under this section shall be retained by the seller for not less than five (5) years from the date of sale.
Any violation of this law could result in up to a $5,000 fine and imprisonment for up to five years.
