Based on early absentee numbers,...

Based on early absentee numbers, statewide voter turnout could exceed 900,000

By: Sarah Ulmer - October 30, 2019

With the general election of 2019 just around the corner, candidates, party officials and lawmakers are urging everyone to head to the polls on November 5.

For those who were not able to make it to the polls on election day, voting via absentee ballot is an option. According to the Secretary of State’s office, 40,254 absentee ballots were requested and as of October 30 there were 30,895 returned.

Using the 2018 runoffs as a reference point, there were 43,000 absentee ballots requested which correlated to 812,956 votes.  With several days left before the election, it is likely that there will be another 5,000+ absentee ballots requested.

The projected turnout, based on the new numbers could exceed 900,000 votes. That would put voter turnout close to the numbers seen during the Barbour/Musgrove election in 2003, which was the last truly competitive gubernatorial contest in Mississippi.

If you are still interested in sending in an absentee ballot, you can find out how to do that HERE.

The counties with the most requests for ballots include: Rankin, Madison, Lauderdale, Lafayette, Hinds, and Harrison counties.
