To put a finer point on it, the same votes who chose twice chose Republicans Haley Barbour and Phil Bryant as governor also chose Democrat Hood as their attorney general.
To be sure, Hood is the best hope that state Democrats have had in a gubernatorial campaign since Ronnie Musgrove in 1999. Like Waller, Hood’s campaign style has a more populist appeal and unlike Waller, he is not afraid to give as good as he gets in the heat of political battle. Hood is a prosecutor well skilled in making his case and driving home his points with little concern for stepping on toes or hurt feelings.
WLOX – Federal judge intervenes in Mississippi mental health system
A federal judge is taking charge of Mississippi’s mental health system, saying the federal government has proved the state isn’t doing enough to serve people outside the confinement of mental hospitals.
In a ruling late Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves said he wants to appoint an outsider to oversee changes. He’s asking the state and federal governments to suggest someone for the role.
The U.S. Justice Department argued during a monthlong trial this summer that Mississippi’s movement toward community services was far too slow, forcing hundreds or thousands of people into avoidable hospital stays. Reeves found that Mississippi is violating a 1999 U.S. Supreme Court decision that said “unjustified” mental hospital confinement is illegal.

…“This is much worse than BP because with BP we saw the oil and knew they had the money to put a fund together,” said Hood. “There was a light at the end of the tunnel. But for folks here, there are two issues: Is someone going to pay for the damage that’s been caused, and if so, will they keep releasing it? Will it happen every year or will we just be out of business? That’s what people are facing here on the coast, and I think the federal government owes them some assurances.”
Hood says he has written letters to Congress hoping they will put together a fund to help those affected on the coast. He hasn’t seen any movement yet but says he’s waiting to take action to prevent litigation issues.

Governor Phil Bryant is endorsing Lynn Fitch in the race for Mississippi Attorney General.
In a tweet Wednesday morning, Bryant threw his support behind the two-term state treasurer, saying “Let’s make it happen!”

WTVA – State accuses eight companies of making calls to people who signed up to stop them
The Mississippi Public Service Commission charged eight companies accused of calling people who signed up with the state registry to stop telemarketing calls.
The eight companies are MediaStratX, United Support, Advanced Marketing Science+Siptones, Olufemi Davis Phipps, Ameri Help, Emergent Marketing, Fusion Data Services and CMWEBIT.
The state accuses the eight of making a combined 775 illegal calls.

WLOX – Mississippi getting more than $19M to combat the opioid crisis
Mississippi is getting more than $19 million over the next three years to combat the ever-growing opioid crisis in America. The money will help expand access to treatment and support near real-time data on the drug overdose crisis.
The money is part of $1.8 billion in overall funding announced Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
