WJTV – No endorsement yet; Hosemann sidesteps question on if he will support Reeves

Congressman Guest endorses Hosemann for Lt. Governor

CLARION LEDGER – Sid Salter: Issues the same, framing will be different as Reeves/Hood showdown looms in November

Sid SalterTo put a finer point on it, the same votes who chose twice chose Republicans Haley Barbour and Phil Bryant as governor also chose Democrat Hood as their attorney general.

And Hood is campaigning on some of the same themes that made former Chief Justice Bill Waller a thorn in the side of Reeves in the GOP primaries – Medicaid expansion as a means to save Mississippi’s rural hospitals, a pay-as-you-go program of infrastructure improvements (although Reeves has accused Hood of a “flip-flop” on raising the state’s gas tax,), and more money for public education at multiple levels.

To be sure, Hood is the best hope that state Democrats have had in a gubernatorial campaign since Ronnie Musgrove in 1999. Like Waller, Hood’s campaign style has a more populist appeal and unlike Waller, he is not afraid to give as good as he gets in the heat of political battle. Hood is a prosecutor well skilled in making his case and driving home his points with little concern for stepping on toes or hurt feelings.

WLOX – Federal judge intervenes in Mississippi mental health system

Federal judge intervenes in Mississippi mental health systemA federal judge is taking charge of Mississippi’s mental health system, saying the federal government has proved the state isn’t doing enough to serve people outside the confinement of mental hospitals.

In a ruling late Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves said he wants to appoint an outsider to oversee changes. He’s asking the state and federal governments to suggest someone for the role.

The U.S. Justice Department argued during a monthlong trial this summer that Mississippi’s movement toward community services was far too slow, forcing hundreds or thousands of people into avoidable hospital stays. Reeves found that Mississippi is violating a 1999 U.S. Supreme Court decision that said “unjustified” mental hospital confinement is illegal.

‘This is much worse than BP:' AG Jim Hood meets with coast oyster providers about impacts of freshwater intrusion

Attorney General Jim Hood paid a visit to Crystal Seas Oysters in Pass Christian Tuesday, speaking with workers there about the ongoing struggles related to the freshwater intrusion plaguing the Mississippi Sound…

…“This is much worse than BP because with BP we saw the oil and knew they had the money to put a fund together,” said Hood. “There was a light at the end of the tunnel. But for folks here, there are two issues: Is someone going to pay for the damage that’s been caused, and if so, will they keep releasing it? Will it happen every year or will we just be out of business? That’s what people are facing here on the coast, and I think the federal government owes them some assurances.”

Hood says he has written letters to Congress hoping they will put together a fund to help those affected on the coast. He hasn’t seen any movement yet but says he’s waiting to take action to prevent litigation issues.
