Today, Michael Watson announced the SIP (Service – Information – Professionalism) plan, his plan to transfer responsibility for driver services to the Secretary of State’s office.
“By enacting the SIP plan and moving responsibility for driver’s licenses from the Mississippi Department of Public Safety to the Secretary of State’s office, law enforcement officers are better able to perform their core duty of helping keep Mississippians safe,” Watson said. “Under my leadership, the Secretary of State’s office will work to create a more efficient way for people to get and renew their driver’s license.”
The central focus of the SIP plan is a promise to make the process of obtaining and renewing driver’s licenses easier for Mississippians without increasing the cost to taxpayers.
The plan includes several innovative proposals to increase accessibility and efficiency. Highlights include an increase in the number of locations for renewal kiosks, an opt-in renewal notification system and a new user-friendly website.
Also included in the SIP plan is privatization of driver testing and of the Commercial Driver’s License process, which would help Mississippi trucking companies continue to compete nationwide and would help bring even more jobs to Mississippi.
