WLOX – Report: MS Public Employee Retirement System won’t reach current funding goals
A new study of the Mississippi Public Employee Retirement System shows the state will not reach its minimum goal of being 80 percent funded by 2042. In fact, as of June 2017, the PERS funding ratio was sitting at 61.1 percent. And that’s an increase over 2016, when the funding ratio was just 60 percent.
The report released Tuesday by the Joint Legislative Committee on Performance Evaluation and Expenditure Review (PEER Committee) is titled 2017 Update on Financial Soundness of the Public Employees’ Retirement System. A Republican appointee trying to keep a U.S. Senate seat in Mississippi has sent a fundraising appeal saying she’s supported by President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.
But, Trump and Pence have not endorsed Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith – or anyone – in the special election…
…Hyde-Smith’s campaign spokesman, Jordan Russell, says “the wrong draft” of the fundraising email was sent Tuesday. Russell says it should have said Hyde-Smith believes Trump and Pence will support her.
WTVA – MDE: LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT UNDER INVESTIGATION
A spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Education confirms the Calhoun County School District is under investigation for testing violations.
Interim Superintendent Jean Ann Casey says the school district is not under investigation. She says she has been in contact with MDE and she was told otherwise.
When MDE was approached regarding the released statement, a spokesperson for MDE says they stand by their earlier statement.

LOCAL MEMPHIS – MS St. Sen. Chris McDaniel Makes Stop In Olive Branch During Campaign For U.S. Senate
Mississippi state Senator Chris McDaniel made a stop in Olive Branch Tuesday. He’s kicking off his campaign run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Thad Cochran for nearly 40 years.
Cochran recently resigned because of health reasons.
McDaniel met and visited with voters at Sweetpea’s Table restaurant in Olive Branch before having lunch. He says he wants people to see and know the real Chris McDaniel in person.
“The idea is to get out and meet people. Let them see who I really am,” said McDaniel.
