Sen. Cochran: Continuing Resolution key to budget amendment

RELEASE

COCHRAN: CONTINUING RESOLUTION KEY TO BUDGET AGREEMENT

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) today encouraged Senators to support a short-term continuing resolution to fund the federal government through Dec. 22.

“We need this legislation to give Congress and the administration additional time to agree on responsible spending levels for the current fiscal year and beyond. We have known for some time that such an agreement is necessary. I hope the December 22 backstop will facilitate an agreement that will enable the Congress to provide funding for important national security and domestic priorities,” Cochran said.

“I encourage Senators to support this continuing resolution. The Appropriations Committees on both sides of the Hill are ready to work constructively to write full-year appropriations legislation that serves the best interests of our nation and its citizens,” he said.

The House of Representatives on Thursday approved the new two-week continuing resolution by a 235-193 vote. The Senate will next consider the measure.

Government agencies and programs are currently funded through a continuing resolution which expires at midnight Friday, Dec. 8.

UPDATE: The Senate passed the continuing resolution by a 81-14 vote Thursday evening.
