State Legislature could follow DOJ’s lead and withhold grants, funding to Jackson
The city’s alleged violation of federal immigration law could lead to the withholding of state grants and funding, if legislators add more teeth to a current so-called sanctuary city law, a lawmaker says.
Rep. Mark Baker, R-Brandon, said he sides with the Department of Justice’s conclusion that Jackson is in violation of federal immigration law, following the department’s crackdown on 29 so-called “sanctuary cities” in recent weeks.
Officials in some sanctuary cities will not hand over individuals living in the U.S. illegally for deportation. Because jails are typically run by counties, rather than cities, county policies can matter more to such individuals.
In contrast, Jackson adopted an anti-profiling ordinance in 2010 that prohibits police from questioning people about their immigration status solely to determine if they are in the country illegally.
