Mostly noncompetitive general elections in the Jackson metro
Many cities in the Jackson-metro chose their new leaders in the primary. Brandon, Clinton, Madison, Flowood and Ridgeland all reelected their mayors in the Republican primary and they face no general opposition.
Others, like Canton, Pearl and Jackson, ousted their incumbents in the primary, the winners of which are likely to be elected in the general.
The Jackson mayor’s race may have the largest general ticket of any municipal election. Chokwe Antar Lumumba, the Democratic candidate in Jackson, the state’s big blue dot, faces five opponents in Tuesday’s election — a Republican, three independent candidates and a Libertarian. Some of these long shot candidates have campaigned in the last weeks leading up to June 6, releasing commercials and posting campaign signs, while others are virtually faceless.
