PENDER: #msleg unlikely to be a “do-nothing” session in 2017

GEOFF PENDER: Lawmakers have an ambitious agenda for ’17 session

If the 2017 Mississippi Legislature tackles even a third of what it has set on its agenda thus far, no one should be able to label it a “do-nothing” session this go-’round.

Legislative leaders have vowed to overhaul and reform the state’s tax system. Ditto with major agencies’ spending, hiring and contracting.

Legislative leaders said they want to revamp the state’s public education funding formula.

They’ve vowed to address the need for more road and bridge funding.

They’ve promised to revisit — and pass — campaign-finance reform.

They’ve talked about tackling online sales taxes — a potential move similar to Alabama’s
