Bryant budget: More for schools but cuts for many agencies

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant is proposing higher spending for foster care and K-12 education in the coming year. The governor Tuesday released his recommended state budget for fiscal 2018, which begins July 1.

Bryant says he wants to maintain current spending levels for public safety, military operations, veterans’ services, emergency management, prosecutors and community colleges.

He proposes cutting budgets for many agencies by 1.8 percent. But, he says that follows steep increases in overall state spending the past five years.
