Miss. House lawmakers prep for catfish inspection fight
Mississippi’s House delegation plans to take up the fight to keep catfish inspections under the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Senate dealt a blow to Mississippi’s Republican senators last month when it voted for a resolution by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to return the inspections to the Food and Drug Administration. Opponents of the resolution say the USDA does a better job than the FDA of protecting consumers against contaminated catfish from foreign countries, particularly Vietnam. The USDA inspections began earlier this year.
House lawmakers from Mississippi and a diverse group of other states, including Connecticut, teamed up last week on a bipartisan letter to House leaders urging them not to hold a vote on the Senate resolution.
