DAILY JOURNAL – OUR OPINION: Appointed superintendents offer schools new latitude

Gov. Phil Bryant’s signature Monday on a bill requiring appointment of school district superintendents statewide ends a major policy and political quest extending over most of the past 50 years in Mississippi.

Senate Bill 2438, later passed by the House, requires all superintendents now elected be appointed when the current electoral term concludes in 2019…

…Many mayors, some education groups and residents of city school districts oppose ending appointed boards.

Opponents of change to elected boards say the move would discourage school board service by high-quality candidates who are willing to serve but not willing to raise funds and wage a political campaign.

The debate over superintendents stretched over decades, and it won’t pose substantial risks to have more discussions about elected school boards statewide.
