Senate Appropriations Committee whacks away at state budget but increases education spending

By: Magnolia Tribune - March 16, 2016

First Senate budget draft is ugly

That chopping sound you might have heard near High Street on Tuesday was the Senate Appropriations Committee whacking away at most state agencies — passing out first drafts of budget bills that cut about 4 percent from most budgets, on top of roughly 1.5 percent mid year cuts recently imposed.

K-12 education, universities and community colleges were spared the knife and would see small increases under the Senate proposals.
