Future of #MS01 could soon be in DeSoto County voters’ hands

1st District could see ‘tug of war’ for dominance

Three of the past four representatives of the district – Roger Wicker, Alan Nunnelee and now Kelly – have all hailed from Lee County, while the fourth, Travis Childers, was from neighboring Prentiss County.

However, according to recent census numbers, DeSoto County is the state’s third largest and has almost twice the population of Lee County. The DeSoto County city of Southaven is the state’s third largest, also according to recent census numbers…

…Wiseman believes DeSoto County has been slow to exercise its potential strength because of the relatively recent nature of its population growth.

“They are just getting to know each other, whereas Tupelo has been the capital of the first district for decades,” Wiseman said. “But it’s going to be a player in years going forward.”
