GATES: Foster care reform could be Gov. Bryant’s legacy

By: Magnolia Tribune - February 1, 2016

Jimmie Gates: What will be Gov. Phil Bryant’s legacy?

It’s worth noting one of the loudest applause Bryant received during the State of the State was when he introduced Chandler in the gallery and thanked him for taking on the task to try to improve the state’s foster case system.

If Bryant is successful in reforming the foster care system, his legacy will be secured.

The one thing that can be said is Bryant and other state officials should have been working to reform the system a long time ago, not waiting until being faced with the federal court forcing the state to take action if the state doesn’t make reforms a priority.

A key in Bryant’s legacy-building may be if he decides in his remaining years in office to do something un-Phil like. Bryant has stuck with his Republican conservative base in his agenda during his first term. He hasn’t showed any tendencies that his last term will be any different.
