BOBBY HARRISON: Gunn, Reeves taking heavy yoke on shoulders
Both House Speaker Philip Gunn and Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves are busy behind closed doors making decisions that will have lasting impact throughout the just-started four-year term of the Mississippi Legislature.
The two presiding officers must make committee assignments – naming chairs, vice chairs and members of the more than 30 committees that are in place in each chamber.
The two presiding officers, through the rules passed by the members, have immense power. No power, though, might be more important than the power to make committee assignments.
