Lawmakers to grapple with tax cuts, tax hikes, deficits
This portends one of the most difficult budgets for lawmakers to tackle since the Great Recession of the late 2000s.
“We’ve got a $200 million problem we’ve got to deal with right off the bat,” said House Appropriations Chairman Herb Frierson. “Then, there are other problems.”
“This is going to be as tough a budget as any we’ve had in a while,” said Senate Appropriations Chairman Buck Clarke.
Recent estimates are that revenue growth projected — and budgeted — for the current fiscal year ending June 30 will come up $64 million short.
