Calls to remove Confederate flag spread beyond South Carolina

A top Republican state lawmaker in Mississippi, the only state in the U.S. that still prominently incorporates the rebel flag in its state flag, is calling for a change to the design, saying the time has come to realize the hurt associated with it.

“We must always remember our past, but that does not mean we must let it define us,” Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn said in a statement, according to the Clarion-Ledger. “As a Christian, I believe our state’s flag has become a point of offense that needs to be removed. We need to begin having conversations about changing Mississippi’s flag.”

While it’s not clear if Gunn’s call will gain momentum (the state’s Republican governor, Phil Bryant, said on Monday the flag should stay put), there are other signs of a bigger national conversation breaking open about the myriad places the rebel flag still appears.
