BILLS PROTECTING SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS HEAD TO STATE SENATE
Bills reducing fees on concealed carry permits and recognizing military service for firearm training head to the Senate for consideration, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves said today. The legislation is part of his legislative agenda.
Senate Bill 2394, which reduces the fee on concealed carry permits, passed the Accountability, Efficiency and Transparency Committee. The fee would drop by 20 percent, so the $100 initial permit would now cost $80. The program’s fund at the Department of Public Safety now has a $2.5 million surplus.
“It is clear we can reduce the fiscal burden of taxpayers who want to legally carry firearms in this state so no government agency profits off of Mississippi gun owners,” Lt. Gov. Reeves said.
Senate Bill 2619 passed the Veterans and Military Affairs Committee. The bill recognizes military service for carrying an enhanced concealed carry permit.
“Members of the Mississippi National Guard, current soldiers and veterans went through extensive lessons on the proper use of firearms,” Lt. Gov. Reeves said. “That is why I believe that training should earn active-duty soldiers and honorably discharged veterans the right to hold enhanced concealed carry permits without paying almost $200 to a private firearms instructor.”
