Tom King Qualifies for Re-Election For Southern District Transportation Commissioner
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Today, Tom King filed qualifying papers with the Mississippi Republican Party for re-election to continue serving as Southern District Transportation Commissioner.
Over the past three years, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) Commission has been able to work together in an effective, transparent manner, to direct the department’s resources to build and maintain roads that lead to jobs. Tom King has been a key part of the stronger collaboration and spirit of cooperation that now exists at MDOT. Since taking office three years ago, Tom King has been guided by a philosophy that “Transportation equals Economic Development equals Jobs.”
“Working together with state and local leaders, we will to continue to deliver safe, reliable roads that South Mississippians can rely on to get to work, to school and to church,” said King. “At the same time, we have to find new and creative ways to fund road maintenance and the repair and replacement of bridges. Together, we will drive safely into the future, and I’m asking people for their continued support to get there.”
MDOT provides oversight of Mississippi’s transportation resources and operations in the three-member elected commissioners from the north, central and southern areas of the state. Commissioners have the authority and responsibility for supervision all modes of transportation dealing with aeronautics, highways, public transit, ports and rail safety. The Commissioners appoint an executive director of MDOT to help carry out policies and procedures set by the Commission. The Commission meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month in Jackson.
