House Speaker Pro Tem, Greg Snowden says community colleges are some of the many agencies seeking extra funds.
“Our budget requests from the various agencies were almost $1 billion,” says Snowden. “That’s probably 9 to 10 times more than what we’ll have to distribute to state agencies. So, we’ve got to be very careful, and very prudent.”
In regards to determining how the projected $166 million extra should be used, Snowden says there are two very important things that legislators must consider.
“We’ve got to maintain adequate reserves; our rainy day funds need to remain full. Our bonding agencies have told us that that’s absolutely critical, and secondly just as a matter of basic fiscal prudence we cannot spend non-recurring monies on reoccurring expenditures,” says Representative Snowden.
