Childers talks “coalition,” distances himself from Harry Reid by name dropping Mark Warner #MSSen

By: Magnolia Tribune - October 16, 2014

Senate candidate Travis Childers says he’s building a winning coalition

Still, Childers, who stressed his working-class background in a meeting with the Sun Herald and in a new ad his campaign released Wednesday, said he can win.

“How does Jim Hood win?” asked Childers, referring to the Mississippi attorney general who’s the only Democrat in statewide office. “I know that a Democrat can win in Mississippi because Jim Hood wins, (former Gov.) Ronnie Musgrove wins.” He said he has the same kind of winning coalition behind him.

“I think that coalition honestly is the one I’ve always had since I ran for chancery clerk in my home county or when it was running for Congress. I’m very appreciative in the wide support I had in my party.”

Childers said his message, which he says is pro-business but recognizes not all government is bad, appeals to moderate Democrats, independents and moderate Republicans. Childers said he supports public education, reduced government spending, an increase in the minimum wage and equal pay for equal work. He also said the state made a mistake by not accepting federal money to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act…

…Childers said he believes a change in leadership would do more and he favors someone less confrontational, someone with the demeanor of Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia.

“I would like to see someone who views are more moderate and more in line with the people of the state of Mississippi,” he said. “Mark Warner … let me tell you why I like him. He’s a businessman. I’ve been told only 10 percent of the United State Senate have business experience. If that is true, no wonder we have $17.5 trillion of debt.”
