Former McDaniel camp manager & sitting GOP state Sen. Sojourner advocating voting for Dem in #MSSen

By: Magnolia Tribune - September 3, 2014

A sitting Mississippi Republican state Senator is openly telling fellow members of the GOP to vote for the Democrat for US Senate and violate state election law.

Not quite the conservative or principled thing to do.

That state senator is Melanie Sojourner, campaign manager for the former US Senate campaign of Chris McDaniel.

Sojourner wrote a Facebook post titled “Regarding a Write-In” that stated,

“If you write Chris in then you ARE voting for Thad! MS law does not allow for a write in candidate. Those who do will only have their vote tossed out. Their (sic) is only one vote you can cast in an effort to defeat Thad… only one. Everything else is in fact a vote supporting him.”

Grammatical errors were her own.

Sojourner’s plea conveniently ignores state statute 23-15-575 which states, “No person shall be eligible to participate in any primary election unless he intends to support the nominations made in the primary in which he participates.”

Ironically, that statute is one which McDaniel and his legal team have repeatedly used to justify their challenge in claiming some 40,000 black Democrats crossed over to support Thad Cochran in the GOP primary but would not support him as the nominee in November, an assumption still left unsubstantiated yet passed off as fact by his supporters.

Mississippi Republican leadership and the Republicans in Sojourner’s state senate district would do well to openly and swiftly call this out for the sour grapes it is, distancing themselves from such tactics promoted and encouraged by Sojourner.

One has to wonder now with his former campaign manager advocating this will McDaniel himself openly take on the same mantle.
