Here is what we know as of now:
US Senate with 99.7% reporting (5 precincts left):
* Chris McDaniel – 49.5% with 153,586
* Thad Cochran – 48.9% with 151,669
* Thomas Carey – 1.5% with 4,803
– 1,899 separate McDaniel and Cochran. A runoff is increasingly likely.
– Travis Childers is the Democratic nomine (no surprise there).
4th Congressional District with 100% reporting:
* Steven Palazzo – 50.5% with 52,523
* Gene Taylor – 43% with 44,685
– Palazzo is up above 50% by 524 votes. A runoff is still possible depending on how absentees shake out and if the perceived ballot snafu in Harrison County is indeed a snafu.
– Matt Moore will be the Democratic nominee in the 4th (another Mr. Irrelevant).
– UPDATE: Harrison County issues do not appear to place the results in play for Taylor. Palazzo should hang on and receive the winning certification barring a shift in absentee and affidavits
– UPDATE: Race called for Palazzo.
Points from Election Night:
– A runoff in the US Senate race would be scheduled for June 24. Everyone in MS can vote in the runoff EXCEPT those people who voted in the Democratic primary last night.
– Thomas Carey just became the most famous also-ran in Mississippi history.
– Gene Taylor carried the coast but the Pinebelt saved Steven Palazzo.
– Voter ID in Mississippi was a success, much to the chagrin of Democrats and the NAACP.
– Over 300,000 Republicans turned out, more than was predicted. This should scare Childers and Mississippi Democrats.
Other Districts:
– Congressmen Alan Nunnelee (1st), Bennie Thompson (2nd), and Gregg Harper (3rd) all easily won their party’s nomination and should cruise to a general election win.
