Cochran’s keeping it positive in Gulfport
U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran does not want to discuss any backlash the Republican party in Mississippi might experience over his race against tea party challenger Chris McDaniel.
McDaniel’s campaign recently accused Republican Party Chairman Joe Nosef of favoring Cochran and asked him to resign. Nosef insists he’s impartial.
After Cochran spoke briefly Monday to the Gulfport Business Club, the Sun Herald asked if the campaign is creating issues for the party. The six-term senator responded: “Economic growth, expansion of our base across a broad majority of Mississippians – those are our goals. And it’s working. Mississippi probably has one of the strongest and politically influential parties in the Republican party.”
But what about the infighting? Cochran stayed his course: “I’m reaching out to everyone — Republicans, Democrats and independents — to support my candidacy. And I’m making great progress with all groups across the board. And I’m very flattered.”
