#MS04: Gene Taylor hits Palazzo over vote for Hurricane Sandy relief at campaign kickoff

By: Magnolia Tribune - April 1, 2014

Taylor wastes no time going after Palazzo in Mississippi’s 4th District

Gene Taylor had waited weeks to officially launch his campaign for the U.S. House seat he lost in 2010 but he wasn’t waiting any longer Monday.

He started he speech about 10 minutes early, apologizing to those who hadn’t made it to the Biloxi Visitors Center.

“I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to see such a great crowd,” he said before thanking his family for standing behind him in the race. Then he lit into U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo, the Republican who beat him, saying there was a good reason he kicked off his campaign in the Visitors Center.

“About 96 percent of the funds to build this building came from Washington from the generosity of our fellow Americans to help South Mississippians to get back up on their feet,” he said.

He ticked off some of the projects the billions he said he and Sens. Thad Cochran and Trent Lott were able to direct to the Katrina recovery. He said people from across America even made sure South Mississippianshad presents that first Christmas after Katrina.

“Now contrast that to our present congressman,” he said, “who when the people in the Northeast needed some help after Hurricane Sandy, he literally stuck his thumb in their eye and voted no on their relief.”
