There wasn’t much of a Mississippi connection at this year’s Grammys. There were a couple of artists from France with robot personas and a young woman from Texas who sang like she was from Mississippi.
And U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo, District 4.
Palazzo didn’t care for the wedding ceremony at the end of the broadcast at about 11 p.m. and he took to his campaign’s Facebook page to voice his displeasure.
“Unfortunately, Hollywood doesn’t value the same conservative beliefs we do in Mississippi,” he wrote. “Last night’s demonstration at the #Grammys is a perfect example of their disconnect.”
He also posted a photograph from the Grammys and invited visitors to his page to “LIKE & SHARE if you’re AGAINST GAY Hollywood’s version of Matrimony.
By 1 p.m. Tuesday, it had 1,700 likes and 685 shares. And it had 1,362 comments, many of them contrary to Palazzo’s position.
“Given the rate at which your state chooses to divorce you are correct, marriage does not appear to be one of your values,” wrote Christopher Smith of Hicksville, N.Y., a hamlet on Long Island.
And he had his supporters.
“That was disgusting,” said Dawn Russell, who doesn’t publicly share her hometown. “Glad I didn’t watch and will be sure not to ever again!! That is not what the Grammys is about!!”
Palazzo in an e-mailed response to a request for an interview pointed to the Mississippi marriage vote.
“As a Christian and firm believer in traditional family values, I believe that marriage is a sacred promise between one man and one woman,” he wrote. “Mississippi voters passed a constitutional amendment supporting this position by a 6-to-1 margin. Unfortunately, Hollywood elites take every opportunity to depict the world in their own view, and that is a view that I believe moves away from traditional beliefs firmly founded in the Bible.”
And he said he welcomed the debate on his page.
