Mississippi bill could make ammo buyers susceptible to identity fraud

A proposal by Mississippi state Rep. Omeria Scott, D-Laurel, could make public the social security numbers of anyone who buys ammunition in the state.

It’s going nowhere, of course, but makes for a fun headline. See above.

Here’s how the law works:

Under HB 231, gun merchants would have to keep a record of all pistol or rifle cartridges sold. On it, they’d have to list the following information:

The kind and number of cartridges
The buyer’s name, address and driver’s license or social security number.
That record would then be “open to public inspection at any time to any persons wishing to see it.”
