Trent Lott: Nuclear Option is a ‘Big Mistake’ That Will Haunt Democrats

Former Republican senator Trent Lott thinks the so-called nuclear option deployed by Senate Democrats is a “big mistake” that will engulf the Senate in chaos.

Mr. Lott spoke to Law Blog about the extraordinary development in the Senate on Thursday when Democrats engineered a rules change to block Republican filibustering of judicial nominees.

“I think it’s a big mistake and is going to make a bad situation even worse,” said Mr. Lott, who represented Mississippi in Congress for 35 years and is now a senior counsel at Patton Boggs in Washington, D.C.

“Do Democrats really think that Republicans wouldn’t return the favor if they get the majority. It’s a slippery slope that will bring nothing but bad results,” he said, predicting that Republicans would strike back.
