Students didn’t receive absentee ballots in time to vote

Students didn’t receive absentee ballots in time to vote

Elise Cole has a list of about 20 students from Hattiesburg who are away at college, and had wanted to vote absentee in the upcoming special mayoral election that will pit incumbent Mayor Johnny DuPree against Dave Ware and Shawn O’Hara.

Only a handful will get that chance, Cole said, because ballots that were requested from the City Clerk’s office at the end of August and the first week of September were not mailed out until the end of last week.

“I’ve got a college-aged student who had asked for one, and never got it,” Cole said. “I got talking with some friends, and wound up with this list with 18 to 20 names and the dates that they requested (a ballot).

“They never received ballots. Our kids wanted to vote and never received ballots.”
