Long Beach legislator appointed to Mississippi PEER committee

Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn has appointed Rep. Richard Bennett, R-Long Beach, to serve on the Joint Committee on Performance Evaluation and Expenditure Review.

The PEER oversight committee is responsible for making state government more effective, efficient and accountable, according to the committee’s website.

Earlier this month, PEER issued a report on the status of the Port of Gulfport that showed promised jobs are unlikely to materialize for 20 years.

“I feel it’s a very important committee,” Bennett said. “The PEER Committee is a way for government entities to be held accountable for their actions.”

Seven Senate and seven House members serve on the committee, and Bennett is the only representative from South Mississippi. He replaces Rep. Jessica Upshaw, who died earlier this year.
