New voters will likely decide Hattiesburg mayoral special election

Voter registration is over. The battle between City Council and Mayor Johnny DuPree rages on.

As of Friday afternoon, between 1,500 to 1,600 new folks had registered to vote in Hattiesburg after Judge William Coleman ordered a special mayoral election. Noon Saturday was the deadline.

Darryl Blalock came to the circuit clerk’s office Tuesday to get his name on the rolls.

“Just to make sure I’m there,” said Blalock, a Mayor Johnny DuPree supporter, who has lived in Hattiesburg for about one year.

He said he did not vote in the June 4 election because he wrongly assumed that the mayor didn’t need his vote.

“I thought he was a shoo-in,” said Blalock, a disabled military veteran.
