No buses for some kids, JPS decides

Last year the same bus driver picked up Chicana Nelson’s children every school day and drove them the three blocks to Green Elementary School.

But Nelson said Monday morning she was frustrated to learn her daughter, who now attends Chastain Middle School, will have to walk seven blocks on busy Northside Drive for her education.

Mississippi law requires school districts to provide transportation to students who live more than one mile away from campus. In the past Jackson Public Schools still provided bus rides to children who lived less than a mile away, like most other districts. But this year, the district is apparently going by the book.
