JACKSON – Gov. Phil Bryant will travel to Washington, D.C. next week to participate in an education forum, where he will discuss his landmark education reform initiatives.
The education forum, “Reading Milestones”, is hosted by the Washington Post and will focus on the importance of reading proficiently by the third grade. The forum will be webcast live at www.washingtonpostlive.com on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. Central Standard Time.
“This is a great opportunity to discuss the strides Mississippi is making in education improvement,” Gov. Bryant said. “The nation is noticing the advances Mississippi is making, and I look forward to sharing our accomplishments.”
At the close of the 2012 legislative session, Gov. Bryant announced he would dedicate the 2013 legislative session to education, and in November 2012 he unveiled his comprehensive reform agenda—Education Works. This session, lawmakers adopted Gov. Bryant’s proposals, including: reading proficiency and intervention policies, increased standards for entry into university teaching programs, scholarship programs for high-achieving students who become Mississippi public school teachers, a performance-based compensation pilot program to reward effective teachers and a public charter school system that will provide new options in struggling districts.
