McDaniel to ACLU: Bring it On

There’s plenty of sabre rattling from the American Civil Liberties Union over the Religious Liberties Act, signed into law recently by Gov. Phil Bryant.

The group is threatening to sue on the grounds that it is unconstitutional. The ACLU claims it violates the separation of church and state clause.

Not so, says sponsor State Sen. Chris McDaniel (R-Ellisville). The law reaffirms the rights of students to pray privately or to participate in student-led prayer, among other clarifications. Essentially, the law does not create any new freedoms or even bring prayer back into the classroom, which is how some billed it, but reaffirms what is already stated in the U.S. Constitution, said McDaniel.

He described a scenario in which the law would come into play.
