Geoff Pender: Obama doing little to advance Obamacare

No one to date has done more to stop or slow implementation of Obamacare in Mississippi than President Barack Obama.

His proposal last week to delay cuts in federal payments to hospitals for treating the uninsured for a year was heralded by Gov. Phil Bryant and other Republicans. That whooshing sound you heard was Democrats’ “expand Medicaid now” balloon being deflated.

The administration appeared to send the same message as that of many Mississippi Republicans: There’s still a lot to figure out before a shift from paying hospitals for indigent care to having more folks covered by Medicaid. Slow it down.

Before that, the Obama administration shot down Mississippi’s proposal to run a health insurance exchange as advocated by Obamacare. That issue had state Republicans divided, until Obama stepped in.
